Abducted Oyo PDP Leader Akika Released After Days In Captivity

The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the release of Benedict Akika, a prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member and close associate of Governor Seyi Makinde, after being kidnapped by gunmen.

According to police spokesperson Adéwálé Osifeso, Akika was freed on Wednesday after being held in captivity for several days.

Akika was abducted from his home in Idi Ape, Olorunda-Aba, within the Lagelu Local Government Area, on September 4, 2024. The assailants, whose identities were concealed by masks, stormed his residence and took him away.

An extensive search operation was launched by the police’s tactical intelligence team, which led them through forests in Ijagun (Ogun State), Ore (Ondo State), and Uselu (Edo State). Their efforts paid off, resulting in Akika’s safe release. He is currently receiving medical attention before reuniting with his family.

In a statement, the police emphasized the magnitude of the search operation, which covered vast areas using advanced intelligence resources. They also assured the public that they are actively working to capture those responsible for the crime.

The statement read: “The politician was freed following an intensive manhunt by the command’s tactical, intelligence, and operational teams. The search extended across forests in Ijagun (Ogun State), Ore (Ondo State), and Uselu (Edo State).

“Akika, who was released on the evening of Wednesday, September 9, 2024, is currently undergoing medical treatment before reuniting with his loved ones. Efforts are underway to apprehend the criminal network behind this act.”

The police urged residents to assist in the ongoing investigation by providing credible information and reiterated their commitment to ensuring Oyo State remains secure from criminal activities.
