Abia LP Chairman Dismisses Alex Otti’s Attempt To Influence Supporters’ Party AffiliationThe Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Abia State, Emmanuel Otti, has dismissed claims that Governor Alex Otti worked against the party during the recent local government elections. In an interview with Punch, Otti was asked about Governor Alex Otti’s statement urging his supporters to vote for any candidate they believed would deliver good governance. Otti clarified, “First, let me correct a misconception. Dr. Alex Otti, the Governor of Abia State, did not and cannot direct his supporters to contest under a different party. As a member of the Labour Party and the governor of the state, he is the leader of the LP in Abia and in Nigeria. Therefore, he cannot and would not mandate his supporters to join another party, either to contest or promote it.”
The LP chairman further explained that Otti’s comment about voters choosing candidates of their preference was within their constitutional rights. “The governor simply told the electorate to vote for candidates they believe can deliver, as they have the constitutional right to do so. Otti himself voted for a candidate of his choice, and he believes that person will deliver.”
Otti compared the situation to a family dynamic, where individuals are allowed to make their own choices: “If you have five daughters, you wouldn’t choose their husbands for them but allow them to select for themselves. Similarly, the governor is giving people the freedom to choose candidates they believe will serve their interests.”
The Labour Party chairman stressed that the decision of the electorate to vote based on local knowledge of candidates is valid, regardless of party affiliation. “The people at the grassroots know the candidates, and the candidates know them. It is the right of the electorate to choose their leaders, not the governor’s responsibility to select them,” Otti concluded.
