Abuja Building Collapse: Police Uncover What Happened Before Tragedy

Tension gripped Wuse Zone 4 in Abuja on August 8 after a building collapsed in the area, prompting emergency agencies and security personnel to launch search and rescue operations.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) received a distress call at about 7:20 p.m. before emergency responders were deployed to the scene.

The development was also confirmed by the FCT Police Command, which said officers were immediately dispatched to the area as efforts intensified to determine whether anyone was trapped beneath the rubble.

The Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka, disclosed that the affected building had previously been sealed by the Department of Development Control. He added that occupants had been directed to leave the structure before the collapse occurred.

At the time of the report, authorities had not confirmed any casualty, while rescue teams continued searching the debris for possible victims. An excavator was also expected to assist responders in clearing the rubble and accessing areas that could contain trapped persons.

The FCT Police Command spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the police response team was led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, ACP Edward Akaniyene, alongside the Area Commander, Metro, ACP Georgelyn Ufomadu.

She further disclosed that personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Federal Fire Service, FCTA Security Service Department and other relevant agencies were involved in the rescue operation.

According to Adeh, preliminary assessments indicated that the building had already been marked and sealed by the Department of Development Control before the incident.

She stated that no victim had been confirmed as of the time of the update, stressing that search and rescue operations remained ongoing to locate and assist anyone who might be trapped under the collapsed structure.

The police spokesperson also revealed that an investigation had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the possible cause of the collapse.

Adeh urged members of the public to remain calm, stay away from the affected location and cooperate with emergency responders to allow the rescue operation to proceed without obstruction.

She added that additional details concerning the extent of the damage and any possible casualties would be made available as authorities obtain more information.
