AFCON 2025: Amunike Throws Weight Behind Osimhen And Super Eagles

Amunike believes Victor Osimhen possesses the drive, leadership qualities and determination needed to inspire Nigeria to success in Morocco. Speaking ahead of the Super Eagles’ Group C showdown with Tunisia, he praised the Galatasaray striker’s mentality while stressing that hard work, not reputation, will decide the tournament.

“When I look at Osimhen, the leadership he’s showing now is the same character he has displayed throughout his career,” Amunike said. “I would love to see him lift the AFCON trophy with this team, but it must come through effort and resilience, not words.”

Nigeria arrive at the competition with high expectations after finishing as runners-up at the last AFCON in Ivory Coast, where they narrowly missed out on the title under former coach José Peseiro. That setback, Amunike noted, should serve as motivation rather than pressure.

He added that Osimhen, who rose through Nigeria’s youth ranks before excelling in Europe, remains the obvious leader of the current squad and has always shown unwavering commitment to the national team. According to Amunike, seeing the striker crowned African champion would be richly deserved after years of consistent performances.
