Oba Owoade emphasized that the public must adhere strictly to the correct title when addressing him in all activities and media engagements.
The statement reads: “This is to inform the general public that the correct manner of addressing the Alaafin in all settings is precisely as follows:
HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY IKU BABA YEYE OBA ABIMBOLA AKEEM OWOADE I ALAAFIN OF OYO
“Please note that the Roman numeral I (One) follows Owoade, not the English number 1.”
The public has been urged to strictly observe this precise wording, without adding any prefixes or suffixes.
In the meantime, Prince Lukman Gbadegesin, a contender for the Alaafin throne, has filed a lawsuit at the Oyo State High Court challenging the appointment of Prince Akeem Owoade.
Filed on February 12, 2025, the lawsuit seeks to annul Owoade’s appointment, citing violations of the Chiefs Law of Oyo State (2000) and the Registered Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration (1961).
Gbadegesin, represented by lawyer Kunle Sobaloju (SAN), argues that Owoade’s appointment by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde was “unlawful, unconstitutional, invalid, null, and void.” He claims that the Oyomesi (kingmakers) had already selected him as the rightful candidate and is seeking a court ruling to affirm his nomination. He also alleges that Governor Makinde’s approval breached due process in several areas.
