Paradigm Initiative (PIN), an organization dedicated to connecting underserved young Africans with digital opportunities, has raised serious concerns about a data breach involving unauthorized websites. These sites claim to possess and offer access to sensitive personal and financial information of Nigerian citizens for as little as N100.
During a briefing in Lagos, PIN’s Executive Director, Gbenga Sesan, highlighted the alarming nature of this situation. He emphasized that these websites reportedly enable the acquisition of original National Identity Numbers (NINs) of citizens, regardless of their status, for a nominal fee.
Sesan stressed that such activities constitute a severe infringement on privacy rights and pose significant risks to individuals and Nigeria’s economy. He pointed out glaring gaps in data protection and cybersecurity measures within the country, lamenting the potential misuse and exploitation of personal information.
The Executive Director called on the government to swiftly investigate these illegal activities, bolster cybersecurity protocols to prevent future breaches, and enforce the Nigeria Data Protection Act. He also emphasized the need to strengthen the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to safeguard citizens’ data effectively.
