Following the cholera outbreak in several parts of the country, Lagos State has reported a grim toll, with 21 confirmed deaths and 401 suspected cases referred to the state Ministry of Health. The situation has worsened across multiple local government areas (LGAs), according to an update by Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health.

Dr. Ogunyemi revealed that the number of cholera cases in Lagos has surged to 401, with Lagos Island, Kosofe, Ikorodu, and Eti Osa bearing the brunt of the outbreak. The death toll has risen to 21, marking an increase of six fatalities since the last report. She attributed the spike in cases partly to the large gatherings during the recent Ileya festivities.

Despite these alarming figures, Dr. Ogunyemi highlighted a slight decrease in suspected cases across LGAs that were previously heavily impacted, attributing this to proactive measures implemented by the state government. She emphasized ongoing surveillance efforts and interventions by the Ministry of Health and allied agencies to curb further spread.

Dr. Ogunyemi underscored the collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Environment and LASEPA in sampling water sources, food, and beverages to pinpoint the contamination source. Surveillance activities have been intensified in affected communities, with a particular focus on LGAs grappling with the outbreak.

In preparation for the reopening of schools, the state government is collaborating with the Ministries of Education to ensure stringent health protocols are observed to safeguard students and staff.

Dr. Ogunyemi urged residents to maintain vigilance, practice thorough hand hygiene, and actively participate in community sanitation initiatives to stem the transmission of cholera in Lagos State.
