During a keynote address titled “Smart Basic Education and the Future of Africa” at the quadrennial convention of the Old Boys Association of Union Secondary School in Awkunanaw, Enugu State, the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, revealed a disconcerting observation. According to Onyia, a staggering 50 per cent of pupils in Enugu State struggle with fundamental skills such as reading in English and solving basic mathematics problems after six years of primary education. The findings indicate that even those who manage to read face difficulties in comprehension. This alarming trend, as highlighted by Onyia, extends beyond Enugu State and reflects a nationwide issue.
Expressing deep concern, Onyia pointed out that in Nigeria, three out of four children who complete basic education lack proficiency in numeracy and literacy. International organizations like the World Bank, UNICEF, and UNESCO have collectively termed this crisis as the “Nigerian Learning Crisis.” Additionally, Onyia highlighted a concerning “Skills Gap” afflicting Nigerian children, attributed to the inadequacy of current teaching methods in imparting essential scientific, technological, productive, and digital competences.
The revelations underscore the urgent need for comprehensive educational reforms to address the deficiencies in the current system and equip students with the necessary skills for the evolving demands of the future.
