Senate Chief Whip, Ali Ndume, has openly disclosed that he received an allocation exceeding N200 million meant for constituency projects, as designated under the 2024 Appropriation Act for his colleagues in the 10th National Assembly.
This revelation emerges amidst ongoing debates and accusations concerning budget allocations and practices within the Nigerian Senate.
Senator Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, found himself embroiled in controversy following allegations put forth by Senator Jarigbe Agom-Jarigbe of Cross River North.
During a heated session in Abuja, Agom-Jarigbe revealed that certain senators, including senior members, were allocated a sum of N500 million each for constituency projects in the 2024 budget.
These claims surfaced while lawmakers were addressing accusations of budget padding brought forward by Senator Abdul Ningi from Bauchi Central Senatorial District.
Ningi had earlier raised concerns regarding an alleged unallocated N3.7 trillion within the substantial N28.7 trillion budget for 2024, leading to his three-month suspension from the Senate.
When asked about the veracity of Agom-Jarigbe’s claim, Ndume, in an interview on Channels TV, responded, “There’s a disparity now; we are not equal; all animals are equal but some are more equal than others. That’s the case. They have agreed to that.
“All the senators have N200 million (each) for their constituency projects, but I am a leader. That is the difference. Ten of us are leaders, including those in the opposition. We receive more than the floor members. It’s normal.
“This decision is made by the senators. We had the Senate budget committee before, but now the floor members entrusted that to the presiding officers. That’s the difference. So, most of the senators don’t know what I receive, and I will not disclose it.
