According to the statement, the complainants, Mrs. Rejoice Odogwu (sister of the deceased) and Mr. Sopuruchukwu Okeke (the deceased’s husband), stated that Chinonso’s body was deposited at the mortuary on August 4, 2023. However, when the family was ready for burial, they were given a completely different corpse.
The family alleged that the mortician, Mr. Joseph, insisted that the body given to them was the same one they had deposited, a claim the family disputes. They pointed out disparities such as the age, hairstyle, and alleged surgical procedures on the provided body that did not match their deceased relative.
Sopuruchukwu Okeke informed the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare that when they rejected the incorrect corpse, Mr. Joseph threatened them for refusing to accept it. The family also revealed that attempts by the deceased’s sister-in-law to visit the mortuary were denied, with the excuse that pregnant women were not allowed access.
Mrs. Rejoice Odogwu explained that the deceased, who lived with her husband in Nkpor, died during childbirth. The family brought her body closer to home for burial preparations, only to discover the discrepancies in October when they came to collect her remains.
The deceased’s sister further disclosed that Mr. Joseph offered them 850,000 naira as a settlement after the incident was reported to the community. The case has been filed and brought before the Magistrate Court in Achalla for a hearing.
