The Anambra State Government has announced its consideration of launching a state-owned airline or forming partnerships with existing airlines to address increasing travel demands. This initiative aims to align with the national transportation policy. Patricia Igwebuike, the state’s Commissioner for Transportation, revealed this during the recently concluded 9th All Nigeria Airport Business Summit and Expo in Lagos, according to a statement from the state’s Ministry of Information on Saturday…….CONTINUE READING
The summit, themed “Addressing Airport Viability as a Key to Successful Aviation Business Ambition,” provided a platform for discussing the state’s transportation strategies. Igwebuike highlighted that the Chinua Achebe International Cargo and Passenger Airport in Umueri, which will celebrate its third anniversary in December, has already handled over 5,700 flights and served more than 343,000 passengers.
She noted, “To boost activity at the airport, we are actively engaging with investors. Currently, we have over 30 proposals for concession and management agreements. Given the high demand from passengers flying to and from Anambra, we’re in talks with airlines like Ibom Air. We are evaluating whether to establish a state-run airline or partner with an existing one to meet this demand.”
Igwebuike further explained that with the development of the Onitsha River Seaport, ongoing feasibility studies for railway expansion, and improvements in land transportation, Anambra is aligning its efforts with the national transportation policy rather than acting independently.
She also emphasized that the primary focus of the Chinua Achebe Airport is cargo transport, a concept that dates back to 1979. “The idea of building an airport at Umueri has deep roots, originating in 1979 under then-Governor Jim Nwobodo. The plan was revived during Peter Obi’s administration and brought to fruition by former Governor Willie Obiano, who paid compensation for the land and initiated the airport’s construction, focusing on cargo and passenger services.”
She added, “Anambra is a commercial hub, with every city and town being economically viable. The airport’s creation was driven by this commercial viability, not a sudden decision. The future is promising for both the airport and the state.
