Women in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State have taken a decisive stand by confiscating and demolishing alcoholic drinks and related substances from various shops in communities across the region……….CONTINUE READING
As reported by Daily Trust, the initiative primarily unfolded in Sabon Bariki and Bukuru Low Cost areas of Gyel District, where a substantial number of women gathered to express their discontent, attributing the substances to their husbands’ perceived irresponsibility.
The women systematically targeted shops and joints where these products were sold, actively seizing and obliterating them. Their efforts were bolstered by the participation of young girls, children, vigilantes, and other volunteers.
In response to the crackdown, some shop owners, upon hearing about the exercise, promptly locked up their establishments and vanished. The determined women, however, vowed to return with even more stringent measures.
Notably, the community and traditional rulers were said to have given their approval for this unconventional action. The women focused particularly on locally produced alcoholic beverages and intoxicants, expressing concern about their potential harm due to high chemical concentrations.
One of the women voiced their grievances, stating, “These drinks are turning our men into irresponsible people. The drinks are sapping their strengths and rendering them useless.”
She continued, “Our youths are losing the stamina to engage in menial jobs or farming to sustain themselves. Instead, they spend most of their time in these drinking places. Our husbands have also been debilitated by the drinks, impacting their ability to fulfill their marital duties at night. Today, instead of having a man and a woman at home, we now have two women at home since our husbands cannot be called men any longer.”
However, a youth, in response to the women’s efforts, expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the exercise, especially among the younger population. He revealed that they were adept at finding alternative sources for the drinks, even if the women destroyed the ones they encountered.
He suggested that the most viable solution to the problem would be government empowerment, enabling the youth to engage in productive activities and have a meaningful source of income.
