In a statement issued by Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, the spokesperson and director of media and publicity for the APC Campaign Council, the party expressed dissatisfaction with INEC’s readiness to permit the SDP’s legal team to inspect the election materials, disregarding an alleged preliminary objection raised by INEC’s counsels before the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja.
The APC urged INEC’s Chairman and Management to immediately halt the inspection pending the determination of the Motion on Notice filed by INEC to set aside the order of inspection. The party also called for disciplinary action against Dr. Longpet, accusing him of compromising his integrity and legal interests by favoring the SDP.
The APC claimed that the REC was facilitating the SDP in compromising, tampering with, or destroying the electoral materials from the concluded Nov. 11, 2023, governorship elections in Kogi. It alleged that the SDP and its candidate, Alhaji Murtala Ajaka, obtained an Ex-parte Order of the Tribunal on Nov. 25, 2023, directing INEC to allow an inspection of electoral materials, even before filing a petition.
The party highlighted that INEC had filed a motion before the tribunal on Nov. 29, 2023, to set aside the orders, stating that the motion is still pending. It questioned the haste in organizing the inspection exercise, fully sponsored by the SDP and its candidate, despite the ongoing legal proceedings.
The APC criticized the REC for allegedly sending messages to INEC staff in Kogi to participate in the inspection in Abuja, considering it a sign of desperation and compromise. However, the Kogi INEC Head of Voters Education and Publicity, Mr. Haruna Sule, dismissed the allegations, asserting that the REC was following instructions from the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
