The circumstances surrounding Justice Ikyegh’s demise have added a layer of complexity to the controversy surrounding his role in Governor Abiodun’s re-election. Weeks prior to his death, political opposition in Ogun had accused him of accepting cash bribes in connection with the upheld election results. Justice Ikyegh led the panel that affirmed a lower tribunal decision, a ruling contested by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party due to technicalities related to the certification process by electoral office INEC. The dissenting judge, Jane Esienanwan Inyang, argued against upholding Mr. Abiodun as governor.

The contentious ruling prompted an appeal to the Supreme Court by Ladi Adebutu, Governor Abiodun’s main challenger in the March 18 governorship poll. The verdict was deemed controversial by judiciary watchdogs, and Justice Ikyegh’s unexpected demise has further intensified scrutiny on the circumstances surrounding the election petition verdict.

Born in 1958, Justice Ikyegh was part of the list of judges slated for elevation as associate justices of the Supreme Court. This process had commenced recently and was expected to conclude before December 31, 2023. The National Judicial Council (NJC) acknowledged an outstanding petition related to the accusations but provided no further comments on the matter. Governor Abiodun denied all allegations of interference in the judiciary, while supporters praised Justice Ikyegh as a dedicated jurist committed to delivering justice to the Nigerian people. The unexpected passing of Justice Ikyegh adds a somber note to an already contentious chapter in Nigerian judicial history.
