Arteta Drops Shock Revelation As Arsenal Prepare For Sunderland After Travel Disruptions
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that he deliberately disrupted his team’s training and travel routines during pre-season to prepare his players for unexpected challenges such as flight delays, traffic problems and other matchday disruptions.
Arteta’s unusual preparation methods proved useful when Arsenal’s Champions League trip to Naples was delayed by air traffic control problems in the United Kingdom. The Gunners arrived in Italy several hours later than originally planned, forcing the cancellation of Arteta’s scheduled pre-match press conference. Despite the disruption, Arsenal remained composed and went on to defeat Napoli 1-0 in their Champions League opener.
Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Sunderland, Arteta explained that he intentionally creates difficult situations during pre-season so that his players become accustomed to adapting without panicking.
The Spanish coach said he has previously delayed meals, changed transportation arrangements, altered routes to stadiums and created uncomfortable dressing-room conditions as part of his psychological preparation methods.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Arteta believes such exercises teach his players and staff to remain calm when circumstances outside their control affect their preparations. Rather than complaining or treating disruptions as excuses, he wants the squad to find ways to use unexpected delays productively.
Arteta explained that when a flight is delayed, for example, the players can use the additional time to rest, bond as a team or prepare mentally for the upcoming match. His main objective is to ensure that unforeseen problems do not affect the team’s concentration.
The Arsenal manager has become known for several unconventional methods aimed at strengthening his squad mentally. In the past, he reportedly hired professional pickpockets to steal players’ belongings during a team dinner as a lesson in awareness. He has also used other unusual exercises and symbolic ideas to promote teamwork, focus and resilience.
The approach was put to the test during Arsenal’s recent trip to Napoli, with the team having to remain at their training base for longer than expected before eventually travelling to Italy. The disruption also forced UEFA-approved changes to their media schedule.
Arsenal will now turn their attention back to the Premier League when they travel to face Sunderland on Saturday, September 12. The Gunners are looking to maintain their perfect start to the campaign and build further momentum in the title race.
Other Matchday 4 fixtures include Liverpool against Fulham, Aston Villa against Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth against Brentford, Chelsea against Hull City, Crystal Palace against Ipswich Town and Tottenham Hotspur against Everton on Saturday. Sunday will feature Coventry City against Brighton and the highly anticipated Manchester derby between Manchester United and Manchester City, while Leeds United will host Newcastle United on Monday.
Arteta will hope that the resilience developed through his unconventional pre-season exercises helps Arsenal navigate another demanding Premier League fixture and maintain their strong start to the season.
