Abuja, Nigeria – In a spectacular showcase of rhythm, culture, and artistic excellence, the 2024 World Drummers’ Day celebration, hosted by ArtsWax Communications and playwright Ola Awakan, captivated audiences in Abuja.

The event, graced by esteemed dignitaries including Her Excellency, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator (Dr) Oluremi Tinubu CON, represented by Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King, showcased the transformative power of drums and theatrical performance in promoting cultural heritage and national development.

In his opening speech, Ola Awakan, the Creative Director of ArtsWax Communications and the playwright/executive producer of “Echoes of the Drums,” underscored the profound impact of drums on society. He reflected on the genesis of his acclaimed play, which has garnered accolades both nationally and internationally since its inception in 2005. Awakan expressed his gratitude to the First Lady for her support and emphasized the role of the Guild of Theatre Arts Drummers in shaping the evolution of his work.

Highlighting the significance of the Beeta Playwright Competition in his journey, Awakan emphasized his vision to elevate “Echoes of the Drums” from stage to screen, envisioning the characters as iconic figures akin to global superheroes. He articulated his commitment to harnessing the creative economy as a catalyst for societal transformation, echoing the vision of His Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, to revitalize Nigeria’s cultural landscape.

The event also marked the announcement of collaborative initiatives between ArtsWax Communications and the Guild of Theatre Arts Drummers, including a Campus Tour and Global Drummunication Tour of “Echoes of the Drums.” These initiatives, coined as “Drummunication,” aim to leverage the power of drums for communication and education, aligning with the President’s agenda for national revitalization through the arts.
