ASUU Condemns Targeting And Intimidation Of Its Members....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Kano Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has condemned the reported victimization of its members at several universities within the region.

Prof. Abdulkadir Muhammad, Zonal Coordinator, issued a statement in Kaduna on Friday, calling the situation a “gross violation” of university regulations.

“We are deeply disillusioned and saddened by the continuous victimization, intimidation, harassment, and dehumanization of our members in some public universities,” Muhammad said.

He attributed these actions to the members’ adherence to due process and university regulations, which has led to their mistreatment.

“The victimization is often carried out quietly by university administrations or, at times, with the explicit support of the Governing Council Chairmen and Visitors of the affected universities,” he explained.

Muhammad highlighted severe cases at Kogi State University (KSU), Lagos State University (LASU), Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), and Chukwuemeka Odumegu Ojukwu University (COOU).

In KSU, he alleged that 120 ASUU members have been unjustly dismissed over the past seven years due to their advocacy for better working conditions, improved welfare packages, timely payment of salaries and allowances, and adequate university funding. Despite seeking legal redress, the court’s decision favored the university.

“We are particularly troubled by the miscarriage of justice in this case and will pursue all legal channels to reinstate the dismissed members,” Muhammad stated.

He also accused LASU’s administration of illegally dismissing the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson of the union in September 2017 for demanding adherence to due process, and later dismissing the Secretary and Assistant Secretary in September 2019 for questioning a wrongful promotion.

The Treasurer was reportedly dismissed on the same day for seeking proper documentation of her promotion.

“In February 2022, two committees exonerated the five ASUU leaders of any wrongdoing, and the Governing Council ordered their immediate reinstatement. However, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s visitation panel’s White Paper has yet to be released, and the members remain unreinstated,” Muhammad said.

In EBSU, he claimed that the former Chairperson, Ndubuisi Idenyi, was suspended for organizing a union committee meeting, and the current Chairperson, Ikecheku Igwenyi, was suspended for communicating national resolutions to branch members. Igwenyi has also been denied promotion to the professorial rank, and the university administration has banned union activities on campus.

Muhammad condemned these actions as violations of constitutional rights and called on university administrations, Governing Councils, and Visitors to adhere to university laws and respect the rights to assembly and association.

“We demand an end to the victimization of our members and urge for the reinstatement of all unjustly suspended or dismissed individuals,” Muhammad concluded.
