The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, has expressed his reaction following the Federal Government’s decision to release a list of new members for the governing councils of 111 tertiary institutions, despite ASUU’s ultimatum to reinstate the previously dissolved councils.

Naija News reported that President Bola Tinubu recently approved the appointments of 555 individuals to serve as Pro-chancellors/Chairpersons and members of the Governing Boards for 111 Federal Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education.

An advertorial signed by Didi Esther Walson-Jack, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, revealed the appointment of a chairperson and four members for each institution. It also announced that the inaugural retreat for the chairpersons and members of the governing councils is scheduled for May 30th and 31st, 2024.

Among the notable appointees are former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega; prominent Nigerian lawyers and Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Wole Olanipekun and Yusuf Alli; former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Peter Okebukola; and labor activist, Issa Aremu.

In response to this development, ASUU President Prof. Osodeke told PUNCH that the Federal Government was expected to reinstate the previously dissolved governing councils rather than constituting new ones. He emphasized that ASUU’s demands go beyond the issue of the governing councils and include other significant requests that the government has yet to address.

“It is not just about the governing council alone; it is just one of the issues. We demanded the reinstatement of the illegally dissolved governing councils, not the formation of new ones. As far as we are concerned, the government has not met any of our demands,” Osodeke stated.

The ASUU President reiterated that the union’s concerns extend to various unresolved issues that need urgent government attention, emphasizing that the reconstitution of the councils is merely one aspect of their broader demands.
