ASUU had previously threatened a strike due to the government’s failure to implement several agreements. Following a meeting convened by the Minister of Education on June 26 to address university-related issues and forestall the planned strike, Osodeke reported that none of the agreements had been fulfilled.

“At the meeting, it was agreed that we would reconvene after two weeks to assess the government’s progress. Our next steps will depend on their implementation,” Osodeke stated.

He highlighted longstanding grievances, including the non-implementation of re-negotiated agreements since 2009 and the accumulation of academic allowances over six years without disbursement. Another unresolved issue is the revitalization fund, aimed at upgrading universities over five years based on the NEEDs Assessment Report, of which only one installment has been paid since 2013.

Osodeke further noted concerns about the proliferation of universities without adequate funding and the delayed transition of university salary payments away from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), as mandated by the Federal Executive Council in January.

ASUU remains committed to monitoring the government’s actions over the next two weeks before deciding on further actions to address these critical issues affecting the university system in Nigeria.
