Former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has clarified that his comments on the OPL 245 matter are motivated purely by patriotism and not personal gain.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Atiku’s media team issued the statement on Thursday in response to remarks by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who had suggested that opposition voices on the OPL 245 issue are driven by self-interest rather than national concern.

Describing the AGF’s position as misleading and an attempt to divert attention from the substantive legal issues, Atiku emphasized that the opposition’s stance is firmly backed by publicly available documents. These documents show that key stakeholders have disputed the legitimacy of the government’s claimed resolution of the OPL 245 dispute under President Bola Tinubu.

Atiku stressed that the OPL 245 matter is too significant for political spin, noting that it involves one of Nigeria’s most valuable oil assets, which remains entangled in litigation and international scrutiny. He called for greater transparency, accountability, and adherence to due process, urging the AGF to focus on substantive issues rather than propaganda.

“Our attention has been drawn to remarks credited to the Attorney-General suggesting that opposition voices on OPL 245 are self-serving. This is misleading and seeks to distract from the real legal and factual issues surrounding the purported settlement.

“Our position is firmly grounded in public documents, including the pre-action notice issued by Malabu Oil and Gas Limited, which raises serious legal objections to the claimed settlement. These documents confirm that key stakeholders were neither consulted nor involved, and multiple cases remain pending before competent courts.

“It is therefore disingenuous for the Attorney-General to dismiss legitimate, documented concerns as ‘self-interest.’ In any constitutional democracy, raising questions based on verifiable records is a duty, not opposition.

“We reiterate for the record that Atiku Abubakar has no interest in OPL 245, has never had any, and will never have any. Our intervention is guided solely by public interest and the rule of law. No rhetoric can erase ongoing legal disputes or invalidate concerns raised through formal legal channels.

“The Attorney-General’s response only highlights the need for openness and accountability. Nigeria’s credibility—both domestically and internationally—depends on transparency, respect for due process, and the supremacy of the rule of law.”
