The initiative will initially benefit seven states: Nasarawa, Cross River, Imo, Abia, Kano, and Kebbi. Akobundu emphasized that the program’s goal is to tackle food supply issues and enhance local agricultural production.
This initiative is part of AUDA-NEPAD’s broader mandate under Agenda 2063, focusing on resource mobilization and technical support to member states. Akobundu highlighted the need for strong collaboration and resource mobilization to achieve Africa’s agricultural and environmental objectives.
She stressed the importance of continuous partnerships for implementing CAADP’s strategies, particularly in land restoration and ecosystem management. Effective implementation will require cooperation between government bodies and local stakeholders, as well as financial and operational support from state and local governments.
Benjamin Uche, AUDA-NEPAD’s Programme Officer for Climate Resilience, noted that the project, which began in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, aims to strengthen smallholder farmers against climate change, food insecurity, and unemployment. He mentioned that the funding will be distributed across the seven states to address these challenges and improve farmers’ livelihoods.
Uche also revealed plans to expand the project to additional states as co-financing becomes available. The initiative focuses on improving food security and supporting smallholder farmers throughout Nigeria.
Munira Abdullahi, Nasarawa State’s Commissioner for Finance, Budget, and Planning, praised the state’s agricultural progress, including the cultivation of 10,000 hectares of land, with 5,000 hectares prepared for harvest. She commended AUDA-NEPAD for its vision and highlighted Nasarawa’s commitment to sustainable agricultural practices.
The workshop, themed “Accelerating the Implementation of CAADP and Scaling Up Land Restoration and Ecosystem,” underscored the importance of resource mobilization and resilient partnerships to drive sustainable development across Nigeria.
