In a statement released on Friday in Abuja, Director of Naval Information Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu revealed that Lieutenant-Commander Gideon Gwaza lost his life during the operation. Adams-Aliu noted that the area was particularly hazardous due to turbulent conditions at the time.
The dredging vessel, operated by Sterling Global Oil Limited, was in danger of sinking near the Okpobo River’s entrance. The Navy’s rescue team, consisting of 10 armed personnel in two interceptor boats led by the Base Operations Officer, faced significant challenges due to strong waves. To bolster the operation, an additional squadron of three boats was deployed, along with Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA, drones, and helicopters from both the Navy and the Nigerian Air Force.
Despite the challenging conditions, all 59 crew members were safely rescued. However, during the operation, Lieutenant-Commander Gwaza fell overboard and did not survive. The rescue mission, which lasted from midnight on July 29 to 10:00 AM on July 30, lasted approximately 10 hours.
Adams-Aliu expressed deep sorrow over Gwaza’s death, highlighting his bravery and dedication. He emphasized the risks and sacrifices made by Navy personnel in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime interests, acknowledging that Gwaza’s commitment and sacrifice will be remembered with honor.
