Unidentified gunmen suspected to be affiliated with the Eastern Security Network (ESN), an armed group associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), reportedly ambushed and killed two police officers along old Gariki Road in Okigwe Council Area of Imo State on Saturday.

Henry Okoye, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed the incident in a statement issued to journalists in Owerri.

The assailants allegedly attacked the officers by hurling dynamite at them while they were on a security patrol. Despite an exchange of gunfire, two officers lost their lives while four others managed to survive the assault.

In response to the attack, Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, condemned the violence and the brutal killing of the Mopol 18 personnel. He attributed the attack to gunmen suspected to be linked with the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Immediately after the incident, CP Aboki Danjuma, in collaboration with the commanders of Mopol 18 and 64, led operatives of the Command’s Special Tactical Unit to the scene of the crime for an initial assessment. He instructed the operatives to intensify efforts in collaboration with other security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators.

Furthermore, CP Aboki Danjuma directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Okigwe, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), and other tactical units deployed in Okigwe to conduct visibility patrols, intelligence-led raids of criminal hideouts, and ensure heightened security to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The Commissioner urged the public, especially residents of Okigwe, to provide any useful information that could aid the police investigation. He assured them of their safety and encouraged them to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to combat violent crimes in the state.

Expressing condolences to the families of the deceased officers, CP Aboki Danjuma reiterated the commitment of the Command to apprehend all those responsible for the attack and ensure they face justice.

The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Imo State and underscores the need for collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies and the public to maintain peace and security in the region.
