Awoniyi Opens Premier League Account As Coventry Continue Impressive Winning Run
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has expressed excitement after scoring his first Premier League goal for Coventry City in their impressive 3-1 victory over Sunderland on Saturday.
Awoniyi doubled Coventry’s advantage eight minutes before half-time at the CBS Arena, helping Frank Lampard’s side secure their third consecutive league victory and maintain their perfect start to the campaign.
Reacting to the result, the Nigerian forward praised his teammates for their collective performance, explaining that the team’s game plan and effective counter-pressing played an important role in creating the opportunity for his goal.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Awoniyi emphasised that securing all three points was more important than his individual achievement, while expressing satisfaction with the way the team executed its strategy throughout the encounter.
The victory means Coventry have collected nine points from their opening three league matches, an impressive return for the newly promoted side.
Lampard’s team will now turn its attention to their next Premier League assignment, where they are scheduled to travel to face Everton as they seek to extend their winning streak.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has praised Fulham’s performance following their 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday, October 31.
Aston Villa took the lead six minutes before the half-time break through Nicolas Jackson, who finished off an assist from Johan Manzambi.
However, Fulham responded after the hour mark, with an own goal by Zion Suzuki helping the visitors secure a share of the points.
Bassey expressed satisfaction with his teammates’ display, particularly considering the quality of their opponents and the difficulty of playing away from home. Nevertheless, the Nigerian defender believed Fulham could have taken all three points if they had converted their scoring opportunities.
He pointed out that the visitors missed two clear chances inside the six-yard box, suggesting that their attacking performance could have produced a better result.
The draw extended Fulham’s unbeaten run in the Premier League to three matches, taking their points tally to seven from those fixtures.
Both Awoniyi and Bassey will be hoping to maintain their impressive contributions as their respective clubs continue their Premier League campaigns.
