Xabi Alonso Hails Estevao After Teenager Shines In Chelsea’s Victory Over Manchester United
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has commended Brazilian youngster Estevao Willian for his professionalism and determination after the teenager delivered an impressive performance in the club’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United on Saturday.
The 19-year-old winger made his first Premier League start of the season at Stamford Bridge, producing an energetic display that earned him a standing ovation from Chelsea supporters.
Estevao had been left on the bench throughout Chelsea’s midweek Carabao Cup penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool. However, he seized his opportunity against Manchester United, becoming one of the home side’s most influential attacking players despite failing to find the back of the net. Two of his attempts were ruled out for offside.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Alonso revealed that he had informed the Brazilian about his starting opportunity following Chelsea’s previous weekend defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Spanish tactician expressed satisfaction with the youngster’s attitude, explaining that he responded to his limited involvement by demonstrating his readiness and determination to earn more playing time.
Alonso said Estevao had delivered the kind of response every coach expects from a professional footballer, adding that the youngster had shown he deserved greater opportunities in the team.
The Chelsea manager also praised the connection between the winger and the club’s supporters, who repeatedly chanted his nickname, ‘Steve-o’, throughout the encounter.
He noted that Estevao deserved to enjoy the occasion, particularly after coming close to scoring and working tirelessly until his substitution. Alonso added that the youngster had given everything despite becoming visibly tired towards the closing stages of the match.
The Brazilian’s impressive contribution was reflected in his statistics. During his 86 minutes on the pitch, he recorded six shots, 12 touches inside Manchester United’s penalty area, created three chances, delivered eight crosses and completed five successful dribbles.
Several of those figures were either the highest or joint-highest recorded by a Chelsea player during the encounter, highlighting his attacking influence.
Estevao’s performance has also drawn attention to his limited opportunities this season. Before the Manchester United fixture, the teenager had made just one previous start, which came against League One side Luton Town in the Carabao Cup in September.
Despite his restricted playing time, there have been no public indications that the Brazilian is unhappy with his situation at Stamford Bridge. Individuals close to the club have reportedly praised his professionalism and positive attitude.
His display against Manchester United could strengthen his case for more regular involvement as Chelsea continue their Premier League campaign.
