Despite being in a position of power, Babangida expressed his unsuccessful attempts to befriend Fawehinmi, emphasizing that he employed various strategies to bridge the gap between them. Speaking on Channels Television, IBB acknowledged Fawehinmi’s role as a formidable critic but lamented that the activist was hesitant to be seen with someone already labeled as an “evil genius.”

Describing Fawehinmi as a good man, IBB shared an anecdote involving one of his former ministers, the late Alex Akinyele, who attempted to foster a friendship between them but met with disappointment.

“He (Fawehinmi) is a good critic and he doesn’t want to be seen with someone that people already perceived as ‘an evil genius.’ I like listening to him. I made it a point to become his friend. He was very friendly with one of my former ministers, the late Alex Akinyele; they were very good friends, and he tried to make us very good friends.

“If we come up with a policy, my first question to my staff was: What would Gani Fawehinmi say?”

IBB further revealed that his admiration for Fawehinmi stemmed from an appreciation for bright minds, emphasizing that he consistently encouraged members of his cabinet to view their participation in his administration as being in the best interest of Nigeria.
