Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has emphasized that Islam does not forbid non-Muslims from eating in public during the Ramadan fast, countering reports suggesting warnings by the Hisbah police against such behavior. In response, Ahmad clarified that refraining from eating in public during Ramadan is a voluntary and considerate gesture rather than a compulsory rule in Islam. He emphasized Islam’s teachings of respect and consideration for the beliefs of non-Muslims, explaining that while non-Muslims are not obligated to fast during Ramadan, avoiding eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours is viewed as a goodwill gesture and a sign of respect for fasting Muslims.
