The dispute has caused divisions within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and Board of Trustees (BoT), raising concerns about potential destabilization as the PDP’s national secretariat resumes operations after the holidays.
Sunday Ude-Okoye, recently declared National Secretary by the Court of Appeal in Enugu, enjoys the support of several NWC members and BoT leaders. However, Senator Anyanwu maintains his legitimacy, citing a pending Supreme Court appeal that he argues sustains the status quo.
“I remain the National Secretary. The status quo is intact because my appeal is ongoing,” Anyanwu said in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, rejecting Ude-Okoye’s authority.
The Court of Appeal ruled in favor of Ude-Okoye, validating his nomination by the PDP’s South East Zone as a replacement for Anyanwu, who had resigned to contest the Imo State governorship election. Following his electoral loss, Anyanwu returned, asserting that the office was never vacant.
Ude-Okoye, however, contends that his nomination and the court’s decision confirm his legitimacy. His presence at the party’s Wadata Plaza secretariat during the holidays underscores his intention to assume full control of the office.
The conflict has ignited debates over the PDP’s adherence to its constitution and internal processes. Senator Anyanwu claims the Court of Appeal overstepped its bounds by intervening in what he considers internal party matters. He further accuses Ude-Okoye of sidestepping the party’s dispute resolution mechanisms, a violation of PDP rules.
Anyanwu also questioned the judiciary’s jurisdiction over leadership disputes within political parties, arguing that such issues are non-justiciable.
