Former Minister of Youth and Sports and ex-Military Administrator of Benue State, Air Vice Marshal Adebayo Lawal (retd.), has passed away at the age of 83. Born on September 14, 1941, in Offa, Kwara State, Lawal was among the pioneering officers of the Nigerian Air Force, having joined in 1963 and trained as a military pilot in West Germany, graduating in 1964. He held various significant roles within the NAF, including Commander of NAF Port Harcourt (1969-1970), Enugu Air Force Base (1970-1972), and two terms as Commander of NAF Kano (1972-1973 and 1975-1977), as well as Air Officer Commanding HQ Tactical Air Command NAF Makurdi (1977-1978).

Lawal’s service extended into governance as he was appointed Military Governor of Benue State from July 1978 to October 1979. He later served as the Federal Minister of Youth and Sports, contributing significantly to the sports sector in Nigeria.

After retiring from active military service, Lawal pursued business interests and engaged in philanthropy, particularly in support of faith-based causes. He was known for his devout Muslim faith.

The funeral arrangements for AVM Lawal are scheduled for Monday, June 24, 2024.
