The affected areas primarily include Otukpo, Apa, and Agatu Local Government Areas (LGAs) within the Benue South Senatorial District, known as Idoma land. Villages in these regions have witnessed brutal attacks, with reports of marauders slaughtering locals, burning down homes, and leaving numerous residents missing.
Despite the gravity of the situation, the perpetrators behind these heinous attacks remain unidentified, although locals often attribute the violence to ‘Fulani herdsmen.’ The once-peaceful Agatu has once again become a scene of bloodshed, extending its impact to neighboring communities and LGAs like Apa and Otukpo.
The violence has escalated into a full-blown war, with communities such as Ogwumogbo, Ikpele, Ejima, Okokolo, Olegomakwu, Olegonyilo, Nahem, Ocholonya, Abugbe, Ugboju, Odugbeho, and Olegobidu in Agatu bearing the brunt. The conflict has even spread to villages like Umogidi and Entekpa areas of Adoka in Otukpo.
Local sources reveal a dire situation, with over 700 armed men surrounding the villages, and Idoma youths facing these adversaries with limited resources. Despite the valiant efforts of the local youths to defend their ancestral homes, they are armed only with dane guns, facing well-equipped opponents wielding highly sophisticated weapons.
The scarcity of security personnel in the affected areas adds to the challenges faced by the communities. A local vigilante recounted an encounter where security personnel warned against retaliatory actions rather than offering protection.
A distressing video circulated by a volunteer on the battlefield depicts the grim reality faced by the villagers. The attackers, clad in military uniforms, appear to be on a mission to eradicate the Idoma community. The volunteer pleaded for government intervention and assistance from Idoma leaders, describing the siege and slaughter as unprecedented.
The military, too, has suffered losses, with three members of Operation Whirl Stroke losing their lives in a coordinated attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Agatu. The Force Commander highlighted the sacrifices made by the troops to prevent further bloodshed in the community.
Benue State finds itself in a helpless state, with communities under siege, residents slaughtered, and urgent calls for government intervention to end the devastating crisis.
