Eleven people have been confirmed dead and six others are in critical condition following a cholera outbreak in the Apaogbozu community of Apa, located in the Ado Local Government Area of Benue State. According to Okafor, the outbreak was first reported about four days ago. She stated that the cholera pandemic has resulted in the deaths of eleven individuals, with six more critically ill. “On the first day of the outbreak, three deaths were recorded. Yesterday, four more people died, and this evening, we have lost another four,” she explained.
“Currently, six others who attended church services since yesterday are affected and need urgent help. They are still inside the church, and I couldn’t enter due to the emergency situation. Our people are suffering and dying,” Okafor added.
She expressed concern over the lack of resources, saying, “We wanted to hire private medical personnel to assist with treating the remaining affected victims, but we don’t have the funds or support. Lives are being lost, and many are seriously ill. We urgently need assistance from anyone who can help. This is an emergency.”
Okafor called on the Benue State government and other humanitarian individuals to provide support to prevent further loss of life in the community. “The situation is beyond our control,” she lamented.
In response, Dr. Yanmar Ortese, the Benue State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, confirmed the outbreak but did not specify the number of casualties. He stated that, according to the information he received, there is only one suspected case of cholera in the area.
“The Deputy Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly alerted me to a cholera outbreak in Apaogbozu around noon today. I contacted the emergency operation center in my ministry to verify, and they informed me of one suspected case involving a person with diarrhea and vomiting. We are moving quickly to collect samples to determine if it is indeed cholera,” the commissioner said.
He assured that public health staff are monitoring the situation across all local governments. “They will take samples to confirm whether it’s cholera or not. This is the current information we have,” he concluded.
