Benue State Government Takes Action: 40 Shanties And Structures Demolished....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Benue State government, under the leadership of Governor Hyacinth Alia, has initiated a crackdown on illegal structures within the state capital, Makurdi, resulting in the demolition of 40 shanties and structures. Tarnongo Mede, the General Manager of the Benue State Urban Development Board (UDB), personally supervised the demolition exercise.

The decision to demolish these structures was driven by the proliferation of shanties in various areas of the state. Mede emphasized that Governor Alia’s directive was to rejuvenate the city, prompting the UDB to take action to restore Makurdi to its former state of orderliness.

“In this initial phase, we have dismantled over 40 shanties and cleared blocked roads,” Mede stated during a press briefing following the operation. He further elaborated that the demolition efforts would extend to areas where developers have encroached on access roads, with the aim of covering the entire city of Makurdi.

Mede also disclosed plans to demolish approximately 800 houses constructed in waterways, particularly in the Kanshio Layout area.

In another development, the trial of former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, regarding an alleged ₦3.1 billion money laundering case, has been adjourned until May 8, 2024. The case involves accusations of bribery aimed at influencing the outcome of Suswam’s trial, where he allegedly offered a substantial amount in foreign currency to a former Federal High Court Judge.
