Benue Woman Expresses Discontent Over Reduced Bride Price By Tiv Paramount Ruler

Benue resident Tyowua Maureen Doofan has voiced her opposition to the reduction of the bride price to N100,000 by Tor Tiv, HRM Prof. James Iorzua Ortese Ayatse, the Paramount Ruler of the Tiv nation.

The monarch recently announced the reduction as a means to promote marriage among young men and women. Tor Tiv emphasized that traditional marriage customs involving itemized lists for purchasing goods are now abolished in Tiv land, describing them as borrowed practices.

According to the new decree by The Tiv Traditional Area Council (IJIR TAMEN), a man seeking marriage needs only N100,000, accompanied by at least three elders, to visit his prospective in-law’s home and formally express his intention to marry. The bride’s parents will then confirm with their daughter if she consents to the proposal. Upon receiving her consent, the groom is expected to hand over the bride price to the bride’s parents and take his wife home.

In response to the announcement, Tyowua challenged any man to present N100,000 as bride price at her father’s house. She also questioned Tor Tiv, asking if he was responsible for her and her sisters’ education. However, she later removed the post due to criticism received.
