Bobrisky’s Controversy: Reps Announce Date For Visit To EFCC And PrisoneThe House of Representatives Committee investigating allegations of corruption involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) is set to visit the Lagos offices of both agencies on Monday, October 21, 2024.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The allegations stem from controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, who made claims through a recorded phone conversation that social media influencer Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, obtained. Ginger Onwusibe, the committee chairman, confirmed the Lagos visit to The PUNCH.

On October 1, the panel questioned officials from the EFCC, NCoS, and Otse regarding claims that Okuneye allegedly paid N15 million to have money laundering charges against him dropped.

Okuneye was convicted on April 5, 2024, by the Federal High Court in Lagos and sentenced to six months for naira abuse. He was released on August 5, 2024, amid allegations of receiving preferential treatment during his detention.

In light of these developments, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ordered an investigation and the suspension of Deputy Controller of Corrections Michael Anugwa and Deputy Controller Sikiru Adekunle, both in charge of the Kirikiri facilities.

During the investigation, Otse presented an audio recording in which Okuneye allegedly stated he did not serve time in a prison but stayed in a private apartment after paying a significant sum of money. EFCC and NCoS officials denied these claims.

A week after the hearing, Otse released another audio in which Okuneye purportedly said he had paid N5 million upfront to a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) to pursue a Federal Government pardon for his money laundering charges. Okuneye claimed the SAN initially requested N10 million but he couldn’t afford it due to a frozen bank account.

In the audio, Okuneye allegedly said, “I’m not in prison, but I’m around there. They got me an apartment because of my godfather… I’m supposed to finish my sentence by July, but if we get the amnesty, I could leave by the first week of next month.”

Before agreeing to testify, Otse initially refused to answer questions until Bobrisky was also made to face the public. After negotiations with his lawyer and committee members, he agreed to proceed with the hearing.

Onwusibe stated that the committee would schedule a date to summon Bobrisky for questioning following their visit to Lagos. “We are visiting the correctional centre and the EFCC office on Monday. After our visit, we shall resume hearings,” he said.
