According to The PUNCH, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) had instructed the Nigeria Airspace Management Authority (NAMA) to ground the non-compliant jets. Reports indicate that many private jets in the country have not paid their import duties, prompting the NCS to seek the recovery of these outstanding amounts. To address this issue, the NCS conducted a month-long verification exercise on private jet owners from June to July.
The recent decision to postpone grounding the jets comes nearly three months after this verification. In an exclusive interview, NAMA’s acting Managing Director, Umar Farouk, explained that the jets would not be grounded as the NCS had sent a new request for an additional 30 days for the owners to settle their debts. “We were set to ground the jets today, but customs requested a month-long suspension for potential settlements,” Farouk stated.
A statement from NCS spokesperson Abdullah Maiwada confirmed this development, announcing the extension of the verification exercise until November 14, 2024. This extension aims to allow operators who wish to regularize their import duties to engage further with the NCS.
