Reno Omokri recently shared insights into the rationale behind Bobrisky’s arrest, trial, and subsequent imprisonment for Abuse of the Naira. Through a post on his Instagram page, Omokri expressed his perspective that the Nigerian government aimed to curb the growing popularity of cross-dressing in Nigeria. However, he noted the government’s caution, recognizing that any direct action could provoke backlash from Western powers. Consequently, the government opted for the approach taken with Bobrisky, a prominent figure in the cross-dressing community.
Omokri emphasized the strategic decision-making of the Nigerian government, contrasting it with recent developments in Ghana. He highlighted Ghana’s passage of legislation targeting LGBTQ rights, including provisions addressing cross-dressing, which prompted swift condemnation from influential LGBTQ advocacy groups in the West. The threat of financial repercussions, such as the reconsideration of a substantial loan from the World Bank, compelled Ghanaian authorities to backtrack on the legislation.
Drawing parallels, Omokri referenced past international reactions to Nigeria’s policies, citing the Obama administration’s opposition to President Jonathan due to his signing of anti-same-sex relationship laws in 2014. Omokri praised General Buhari’s administration for its adept handling of the situation, including enlisting the services of David Axelrod, a strategist known for his work with LGBTQ advocacy groups in America. This strategic maneuvering aimed to garner support from Western powers while maintaining domestic policies aligned with Nigerian cultural norms.
