The Borno State Police Command confirmed the fatalities, stating that the boat capsized in the Dikwa Local Government Area. According to Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, the accident took place around 3:30 PM in the Bakassi community, situated between Mafa and Dikwa along Maiduguri Road.

Eyewitnesses reported that local divers recovered six bodies while three passengers were rescued. The incident happened during a boat journey from Zabarmari to Dusuman, where two females and four males drowned due to heavy winds and a sandstorm.

Similarly, in August 2021, eight people lost their lives when a passenger boat capsized in Shani Local Government Area, carrying approximately 21 passengers returning from a market. Local representative Ibrahim Musa confirmed that about six bodies were recovered after the incident, which occurred around 7:00 PM.
