Breaking: Constitutional Compliance Affirmed By Pro-Wike Speaker In Defection To APC Amid Rivers Crisis
In a recent revelation, the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Martins Chike Amaewhule, shed light on the decision of twenty-seven lawmakers to defect from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The primary catalyst for this political shift, according to Amaewhule, is the ongoing crisis within the state chapter of the PDP.
Amaewhule emphasized that the departure from the PDP is also influenced by the commendable efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in appointing individuals from Rivers State to various positions. The factional Speaker commended President Tinubu’s inclusive approach, noting that appointments extended to Rivers indigenes transcend party lines.
During a dedication service and stakeholders meeting of the APC in Port Harcourt, Amaewhule highlighted the ineffectiveness of the 4-man group led by Rt. Hon Edison Ehie, asserting that they lack the capacity to form a quorum. He declared any actions undertaken by this group in the name of the Assembly as null and void.
Amaewhule provided insight into the lawmakers’ interactions with President Buhari, stating, “We begged Mr President, the former president could not attend to the problems of the State.” He lauded the ongoing developments, including progress on the east-west road and increased appointments of Rivers people to key positions.
Acknowledging challenges in the country, Amaewhule expressed optimism in the foundation laid by President Buhari, urging Nigerians to support him. He revealed ongoing legislative efforts, such as the passage of the State Fund Management Bill, which aims to secure financial autonomy for the State legislature.
The factional Speaker criticized the withholding of funds by the governor, terming it a violation of the constitution. He affirmed that once the State Fund Management Bill receives assent, the Assembly’s funding would be derived directly from the consolidated revenue of the State, eliminating the need to rely on the governor’s discretionary allocation.
In concluding his address, Amaewhule called on the people of Rivers State to rally behind President Buhari and support the appointed officials, emphasizing the importance of legislative initiatives that benefit the citizens of Rivers State.
