In a confidential memo dated October 20, 2025, and addressed to the Brigade Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Owena Cantonment, Akure, the DSS disclosed that credible intelligence revealed plans by ISWAP to launch coordinated attacks on targeted communities.

The memo, signed by Hi Kana, Director of Security, DSS Ondo State Command, identified Eriti Akoko and Oyin Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area, as well as Owo town in Owo Local Government Area, as potential targets.

According to the DSS, insurgents have already begun surveillance operations in these areas.

“Intelligence confirms plans by ISWAP members to carry out coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo and Kogi States soon. Security alertness in all identified locations must be immediately heightened to prevent loss of lives and property,” the memo read.

The alert comes three years after the June 2022 Owo massacre at St. Francis Catholic Church, where over 40 worshippers were killed by suspected ISWAP militants — one of the deadliest terrorist incidents in South-West Nigeria.

Following the new alert, the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, convened a high-powered security meeting on Tuesday with stakeholders from the Akoko Police Area Commands in Ikare and Iwaro-Oka to strengthen preventive security measures.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Ayanlade Olayinka, the meeting was held in line with the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s proactive policing strategy.

Olayinka said:

“The session was aimed at consolidating security partnerships and fostering stronger collaboration between the police and local communities.”

Attendees included traditional rulers, senior police officers, Fulani and Igbo community leaders, the NURTW, Okada Riders Association, Farmers’ Association, Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS), Vigilante and Hunters Associations, and the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), led by Ambassador Gabriel Ariyo.

Participants commended the police command for maintaining peace and pledged continued cooperation through actionable intelligence sharing. Farmers promised to provide timely information, while traditional rulers emphasized the need to secure border communities adjoining Ekiti and Kogi States.

Representatives of the Fulani and Igbo communities praised the commissioner’s fairness and inclusive policing approach, reaffirming their commitment to vigilance and collaboration.

CP Lawal appreciated their support and encouraged ongoing partnership, even sharing his personal contact information to enable direct communication with the public.

“Together, we will ensure the safety of every resident across Ondo State,” he assured.
