Ngige was reportedly taken into custody on Wednesday in what a family source described to Vanguard as a “commando-style raid” at his residence on Justice Mohammed Bello Road, Asokoro, Abuja.
The source stated that around 20 EFCC operatives from the agency’s Wuse II Zonal Office stormed Ngige’s home and whisked him away without giving him the chance to change clothes. “He was taken in his pyjamas,” the family member added.
Prior to this, Ngige had been under administrative bail and had been cooperating with the EFCC, including attending previous questioning sessions.
Under his bail conditions, he was required to submit his travel documents, but he had embarked on a medical trip to the United States. During the journey, he reportedly lost his passport in the United Kingdom, forcing him to cancel the trip. Ngige later obtained emergency travel documents from the Nigerian High Commission in London to return to Abuja.
Upon his return, Ngige reportedly drafted a letter to notify the EFCC about the lost passport and to explain why he had been unable to submit the document as required. However, the letter had not been submitted when the EFCC operatives arrived to arrest him.
Ngige was said to be shocked by the arrest, insisting that he had not violated his bail terms and had remained fully cooperative with the commission.
According to Vanguard, the EFCC intends to formally charge Ngige in court, where his lawyers are expected to petition for bail.
