The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Maman, made this announcement following the federal cabinet meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Professor Maman revealed that the heads of these institutions are now free to conduct recruitment exercises without the need for approval from the Head of Service of the Federation. The President directed the removal of Vice Chancellors from the platform that previously hindered recruitment, aiming for more efficient management of these educational institutions.

“The president and the council are just concerned about the efficiency of the management of the universities, and so it has nothing to do with the integrity or options of platforms,” said Professor Maman. He emphasized that the autonomy granted to universities by law was being eroded by IPPIS, and the decision seeks to restore that autonomy.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris, added, “Today, the universities and other tertiary institutions have gotten a very big relief from the integrated personnel payroll and information system. You will recall that the university authorities and the others have been clamoring for the exemption of the universities and other tertiary institutions from this system. Today, the council has graciously approved that.”

This means that universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and other tertiary institutions will now handle the payment of their personnel independently, freeing them from reliance on the IPPIS.
