The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Aisha Garba, disclosed this in Kano on Monday during a three-day training programme focused on the revised School-Based Management Committees (SBMC) operational documents. The training brought together stakeholders from the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to the Commission, key issues such as school safety, education in emergencies, climate change, and gender-based violence have now been integrated into the updated SBMC operational guidelines. The aim is to strengthen community involvement in safeguarding schools and ensuring continuous learning.
Speaking on behalf of the Executive Secretary, the Head of Community Engagement and Social Mobilisation at UBEC, Patricia Uche, said the review was prompted by rising incidents of banditry, kidnappings, and attacks on educational institutions.
“One of the major updates is education in crisis. We are talking about recent cases of banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges affecting schools and communities,” she said.
Uche explained that the revised framework is designed to encourage stronger community participation in protecting schools and supporting efforts to keep children in the classroom.
She added that the new guidelines also introduce enhanced safe school initiatives, noting that many public primary schools remain unfenced and vulnerable to security threats.
“We want communities to become more involved in identifying risks and advocating measures that will make schools safer for learners and teachers,” she said.
