An internal memo from the agency confirmed the kidnapping, stating that the gunmen used Chima’s phone to communicate their ransom demand. Emmanuel Al-Hassan, the unit commander, detailed in the memo that the incident occurred on the road after Maduka University, specifically at OPI junction.

“Information received indicates that Chima was driving a Toyota saloon car when he was taken,” the memo noted. “The unit commander has already been contacted by the kidnappers, who have made a demand for 50 million naira.”

The memo also mentioned that further updates would be provided as the situation develops.

Security has been declining in the South-East region of Nigeria, with increasing incidents of kidnapping and violence attributed to non-state actors. These groups have targeted not only government officials but also military and police personnel, resulting in significant ransoms and, in some cases, fatalities.

The Nigerian government has implicated the pro-Biafra group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in these attacks, though the group has consistently denied any involvement.
