In a statement released on Sunday, signed by SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi, the unions highlighted that their ultimatum to the Federal Government regarding withheld salaries expired at midnight.
Their demands include the payment of four months’ withheld salaries, improved remuneration, earned allowances, and the implementation of the 2009 agreements with the government.
In response to previous strikes by university-based unions in 2022, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Labour and Employment, enforced a ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy. Although President Bola Tinubu directed the payment of four months’ salaries for academic staff last October, no similar directive has been made for non-teaching staff, prompting concerns from the unions about inequality.
Despite protests and several ultimatums, the withheld salaries remain unpaid. The unions have urged state-owned universities to align their local demands with the nationwide strike.
Their statement emphasized, “Strict compliance with this directive is mandatory for all NASU and SSANU branches in Federal and State Universities, as well as Inter-University Centres.”
The last ultimatum, given during a protest on July 18, called for payment of the withheld salaries within ten days, warning of a potential shutdown if demands were not met. The unions expressed frustration over the lack of government response and have called for all members to hold a congress on Monday and proceed with the strike.
