Dated September 18, the memo, titled “CONVEYANCE OF APPROVAL; RE: APPEAL TO USE N3,000,000,000.00 (THREE BILLION NAIRA) FROM THE COVID-19 PALLIATIVE FUND FOR VERIFICATION OF THE NATIONAL SOCIAL REGISTER,” discloses the approval of the funds from the Covid-19 Palliative Fund for the specified purpose.

The release of the N3 billion to the now-suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Betta Edu, has raised concerns, leading to investigations by presidential authorities and anti-graft agencies. Several companies were awarded contracts from this fund, including one owned by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who received N438.1 million for consultancy services.

The controversial disbursement of funds has sparked a probe into other beneficiaries of the N3 billion contract. Notable companies include Fabunmi Olanipekun & Co. (N419.5 million), Vintsolve Global Consult (N558.8 million), Periscope Consulting (N277 million), Blue Trend Enterprise (N277.8 million), Laitop Dynamics Interlink Services (N277 million), Memak Nigeria Limited (N277 million), MC Van Management Consult Limited (N275.8 million), and Danzinger Nigeria Limited (N275.8 million).

Questions about the legitimacy of these companies and their owners have arisen, with some lacking proper registration records or having unknown ownership details. Despite the sizable contracts awarded, all contractors claimed to have verified 11 million homes in Nigeria within one month, as revealed in a Twitter post by Ude.

Additionally, SaharaReporters previously reported that Edu instructed the Accountant General of the Federation to transfer public funds to a private account, raising concerns about financial mismanagement. The minister’s approval of N585,198,500.00 into a personal account further fueled allegations of fraudulent activities.

Furthermore, it was disclosed that Edu’s ministry approved funds for flight tickets and airport taxis for a trip from Abuja to Kogi State, despite the absence of an airport in the latter. Following these controversies, President Tinubu suspended Edu and initiated an investigation into the alleged fraudulent activities of the minister.
