This was confirmed by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan. While he did not provide a specific date for the updated timetable, Oketola assured that all INEC activities would adhere to the country’s electoral laws.

He made the remarks in a conversation with Punch, responding to calls from political parties and stakeholders demanding a new election schedule.

INEC had previously published its timetable on Friday, February 13, 2026, setting the Presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, and the Governorship and State Assembly elections for March 6, 2027. Prof. Amupitan announced the original dates at a press briefing in Abuja.

However, some stakeholders raised concerns that the proposed election dates overlap with the holy month of Ramadan, which could reduce voter participation and compromise inclusiveness.

In response, the National Assembly recently amended the Electoral Act 2026, reducing the mandatory notice period for elections from 360 days to 300 days. The updated Clause 28 now requires INEC to publish election notices at least 300 days before the election, specifying both the date of the election and the location for submission of nomination papers.

The amendment, which has been signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, provides INEC with more flexibility to schedule the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections, potentially moving them to late December 2026 or January 2027.
