A spokesperson for the DHQ, Major General Samaila Uba, told AFP that no fewer than 36 officers are currently on trial over their alleged roles in the failed attempt.

The proceedings, which began last week in Abuja, are taking place at a military facility under strict security arrangements.

According to military authorities, all subsequent sessions of the court martial will continue to be held without access to the public or media.

The spokesperson added that the next sitting will also be conducted behind closed doors.

The court martial was formally inaugurated on Friday, with the accused officers arraigned before a panel of military judges for the commencement of proceedings.

The trial is regarded as one of the most significant military disciplinary cases in recent years.

In a related development, six civilians are also facing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja over alleged links to the same plot, and they have all pleaded not guilty.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, experienced several military coups in the years following independence in 1960 but has maintained uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999.
