In a significant development, Minister Muhammad Pate has exposed a job racketeering scandal at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) in Ile Ife. Following the directive from the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate, an investigation was initiated, resulting in the termination of employment for over 1500 workers who were hired in June 2022. This decision comes as a response to alleged irregularities in the employment process, orchestrated by the former Acting Chief Medical Director, Prof Afolabi Owojuyigbe. The investigation revealed that Prof Owojuyigbe had employed a staggering 1973 staff, surpassing the approved waiver for 450 vacancies granted to the hospital by the Federal Government in the 2022 employment process.

Notably, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare had, in November 2023, implicated certain officials of the teaching hospital, including Prof Afolabi Owojuyigbe, in alleged job racketeering activities.
