The National Hospital in Abuja is currently facing a crisis as the digital medical records of thousands of patients have gone missing, causing outrage, confusion, and frustration among both patients and health workers. On New Year’s Day, when health workers resumed duty, they discovered that the system had crashed, preventing access to the digital medical data platform. It was revealed that the service providers responsible for the platform, known as ‘health in the box,’ may have intentionally or unintentionally crashed the system, erasing all medical data and leaving no backup.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that disagreements over the cost of services and the hospital’s financial struggles with the service providers could be behind this drastic action. Consequently, the entire medical history of National Hospital patients has been wiped out, forcing health workers to revert to the old method of paper documentation until a new efficient system is implemented.
A health worker expressed frustration, stating that patients’ records have been unexpectedly wiped out by the failed digital service providers who left with all the data without prior notice. The absence of detailed health histories poses challenges for patients with various ailments, those at different treatment stages, those in debt to the hospital, and others.
Despite the hospital’s previous success with the digital platform, health workers have now returned to manual documentation. A new digital record platform has been installed, but health workers are still awaiting the necessary training to operate it effectively. Patients will need new cards and identification numbers, as the existing ones cannot access the old records.
The situation has particularly affected National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) patients, who face increased frustration as they navigate through the hospital, filing numerous forms due to the loss of their medical records. Some wonder why the hospital management allowed the service providers to allegedly crash the digital platform without ensuring a backup for the new service providers.
The hospital’s spokesperson, Tayo Haastrup, countered the claims, stating that the digital medical record platform was not crashed by the service providers, and there is indeed a backup. According to Haastrup, the hospital transitioned to a new service provider, resulting in teething problems at the initial stage, but there is a backup that is currently being utilized.
