Breaking News: ACF Urges Reopening Of Nigeria/Niger Borders, Seeks Appeals
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) is urging the federal government and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) members to reconsider the closure of the Nigerien and Nigerian borders, emphasizing the impact on economic activities between the two nations. The statement pointed out that the sustained closure of the borders stems from economic sanctions imposed by Nigeria and other ECOWAS members since July 2023. This measure, coupled with the threat of military intervention, was intended to pressure the military regime in Niger to restore the civilian government of Mohammed Bazoum, following the June 2023 military coup in Niger.
Despite ECOWAS recently expressing conditional willingness to engage in dialogue with the Nigerien military regime, the threat of military action remains. ACF strongly criticized any change of government achieved through non-constitutional means and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the sanctity of bilateral or multilateral agreements, particularly within the framework of ECOWAS—an organization Nigeria played a pivotal role in establishing.
The statement highlighted the deep-rooted historical, socio-cultural, economic, and political ties between Nigeria and Niger, predating European colonialism. ACF expressed dismay at the imposition of “arbitrary and artificial boundaries” between the two nations’ communities, emphasizing the importance of preserving these longstanding connections.
